Galvanized sheet steel

Galvanized sheet products are cold-rolled or hot-rolled steel sheets coated with zinc to protect the base metal from atmospheric corrosion. Sheet galvanized steel is in demand in those industries where high demands are placed on corrosion resistance, durability, strength, appearance, and at the same time, the suitability of products for profiling, stamping, applying various types of additional coatings is important. Main standards in the field of galvanized sheet production: EN 10346 (Europe), ASTM A653/A653M (USA).

Galvanized sheet is widely used in the following fields:

  • galvanized sheets are widely used in construction in the manufacture of structural elements of low-rise construction (LSTK), in the sheathing of heating mains and various thermal insulation, in the manufacture of entrance doors, elevators, reinforcing profiles for PVC windows and plastic doors, euro-mounts for drywall, etc .;
  • in the automotive industry for the front and inner parts of the car body, repair of the front parts of the body of public transport (buses, trams);
  • in general mechanical engineering and instrument making for housings of electromechanical equipment, household appliances, elements of metering devices, packaging;

Galvanized steel sheet according to EN 10346 is available in zinc-plated, zinc-iron, zinc-aluminum, aluminium-zinc or aluminium-silicon:

  • Zinc coating (Z) is obtained by immersing the prepared strip in a melt bath containing at least 99% zinc.
  • Zinc-iron coating (ZP) is formed by immersing the strip in a bath of molten zinc (not less than 99%), followed by annealing to form an iron-zinc coating with an iron content of 8 to 12%.
  • Zinc-aluminum coating (ZA) is applied by immersion in a bath containing zinc and about 5% aluminum, and a small amount of mischmetal (mixture of metals).
  • An aluminum-zinc coating (AZ) is obtained by immersing 55% aluminum and 1.6% silicon in a melt bath (the rest is zinc).
  • An aluminium-silicon coating (AS) is formed by passing a molten metal bath containing aluminum and 8% to 11% silicon through a bath.

Galvanized sheet according to EN 10346 can be made from the following steel grades:

  • Building and construction steels: S220GD-S550GD
  • Cold forming of high strength steels: HX160YD, HX180YD, HX180BD, HX220YD, HX300LAD, etc.
  • Multi-phase cold work steels: HDT450F, HCT490X, HDT590X, HCT780X, HCT980X, HCT780T, HDT580X, etc.

The coating weight is expressed in grams per m2 and characterizes the weight of the protective layer deposited on both surfaces of the strip. The coating designation of a galvanized sheet uses its type (Z, ZF, ZA, AZ, AS) and nominal weight. For galvanized products, depending on the class of the protective layer, the minimum weight on both surfaces of the product can be from 100 to 600 g/m2 (three points on average).

The main US standard for hot dip coated steel is ASTM A653/A653M. It describes the requirements for zinc and zinc coated steel sheets.

Galvanized steel can be made from the following steel grades:

  • Commercial steels (CS, types A, B and C)
  • Formed steels (FS, types A and B)
  • Deep drawing steels (DDS)
  • Ultra deep drawing steels (EDDS)
  • Structural steels (SS)
  • High Strength Low Alloy Steels (HSLAS Types A and B)
  • Solid solution steels (SHS)
  • Dry hardened steels (BHS)

Depending on the chosen class of zinc coating (G01-G360 for the imperial system or Z001-Z1100 for the international SI system), the minimum weight of the protective material can vary from 90 to 1100 g/m2 on both sides of the product.

Geometric dimensions and tolerances of galvanized steel coils manufactured in accordance with ASTM A653/A653M must comply with the requirements of ASTM A924/A924M.
